New pedestrian crossings in three areas of the city

The interventions for the safety of the city streets continue. In the last session the City Council gave the green light to three projects relating to the pedestrian crossings in Viale Redi, Via Vittorio Emanuele II and Viale Corsica.

“These are small, but significant interventions which improve the safety of three busy pedestrian crossings”, says the Councilor for Mobility Stefano Giorgetti, “widening the pavements and creating traffic dividers.”

The works will be realized as part of the Global Service. The investment planned is over €94,000 (excluding VAT).

Approfondimenti

Here are the details of the interventions.

Via Vittorio Emanuele II

Currently, there is a pedestrian crossing on Via Celso after a bend that creates problems for the visibility of pedestrians. The project includes moving this pedestrian crossing to before the bend, expanding the existing traffic island and creating a safe area in the centre of the carriageway which will allow pedestrians to cross in two stages.

In addition, the new arrangement will allow the vehicles coming from the centre to have better visibility of the pedestrians waiting to cross.

Viale Corsica

The intervention concerns the intersection of Viale Corsica, Via Pietro Della Valle and Via dell’Arcovata, which is a junction with high-flow traffic. The project consists in widening the pavements and building a raised traffic island in the junction area to slow down the traffic flow on Viale Corsica and Via dell’Arcovata.

This solution will make the intersection more noticeable and at the same time it will prevent irregular parking near the intersection. Changes will be also introduced to give priority to the traffic flow coming from Via Mariti towards Via Circondaria while two new pedestrian crossings will be built on Via Circondaria before and after the intersection.

Viale Redi

The project aims to expand the pavements at the pedestrian crossing between Via Maragliano and Via Monteverdi. Along the embankment, widening will be extended to the area facing the bus-stop. Thus the pedestrians will be able to cross the avenue more rapidly. A new area will be available to allow pedestrians to wait at the bus-stop in safety. They will also benefit from a wider visibility so as to choose the best moment to cross.

Opposite the embankment, the expansion of the pavement will cover a stretch of more than 20 meters, starting from the intersection with Via Monteverdi.

On this side too, visibility for the pedestrians who want to cross will be improved, abusive parking on the intersection will be discouraged, and bike racks as well as bins will be positioned in safe locations.
