Identità e nomadismi alle Papesse: inaugurazione 27 maggio a Siena

Palazzo delle Papesse opens its second exhibition cycle of the year with a vast group show, which will occupy all of the Palazzo spaces. The show Identity&Nomadism tries to investigate the role of the artist into contemporary culture. Integration and conflicts are redefining our perception of self. Who's a foreigner and for whom? Who affirms more strongly his own belonging or identity: a nomad or a resident? Who has no roots? Is the artist a nomad by definition? And which identity is the artist talking about ? Rather than offering definitive answers to such questions, the group show will be offering cues and reflections showing the works of about 20 artists: Ajamu, Chantal Akerman, Jananne Al-Ani, Ghada Amer, Carlos Amorales, Nuria Carrasco, Marlene Dumas, Tracey Emin, Jon Mikel Euba, Meschac Gaba, Lyle Ashton Harris, Sandi Hilal and Alessandro Petti, Alfredo Jaar, William Kentridge, Jennifer and Kevin McCoy, Mario Rizzi, Zineb Sedira, Medhat Shafik, Do-Ho Suh, Kara Walker, Sislej Xhafa, Chen Zhen, Zelimir Zilnik.
A rich calendar of events will accompany the whole period of the show.

In the Sienese territory, as well as in other places in Tuscany, an international congress, seminars, meetings, musical and theatre events, publications will help analyzing and summing up the results of the debate focused on the themes of the show.
Also, for the first time, Palazzo delle Papesse extends its collaboration to the University of London. The conference Fortress Europe and Its " Others": Cultural Representations in Film, Media and the Arts (April 4-6, 2005) organised by Prof. Yosefa Loshitzky becomes a common ground and the results of both events will be analysed in a joint publication.
The show catalogue, bilingual edition, will be published by Silvana Editoriale, and will be containing essays by Lanfranco Binni, Enrica Capussotti, Ross Formann, Lorenzo Fusi, Armando Gnisci, Marco Pierini.

The show is co-produced by Palazzo delle Papesse and by Regione Toscana (projects TRA ART regional network for contemporary art and PORTO FRANCO. Toscana, land of peoples and cultures)
The underground vaults of the ex-Bank of Italy this time will be part of the show. The Caveau cycle, after three complete cycles, stops for a while to give space to the rich selection of works on show into Identity&Nomadism.
